The Norwegian National Museum, situated on the banks of the Oslo Fjord, is the largest art museum in the Nordic region, with a construction area of approximately 54,000 square meters. Designed by the German architectural firm Kleihues + Schuwerk, it was completed in 2022.
In terms of architectural design, the museum features two distinct facades crafted from natural stone: the lower part of the building is massive and enclosed, while the upper 130-meter-long "Hall of Light" is light and semi-transparent. As a pilot project for the regional sustainable development initiative "FutureBuilt," its carbon emissions during construction, operation, and transportation are approximately 50% of those of a traditional museum of the same scale.
